Born and raised in Costa Rica, Guita Schyfter studied psychology at the Universidad Autónoma de México.  She shifted her interests while training in Great Britain at the Institute of Educational Technology at the Open University. With a grant from the British Council she took the Television Production and Directors Course at the B.B.C. in London.

On her return to Mexico she worked at Schools Television, producing and directing three weekly television programs on artistic and health education, 20 audiovisual programs for the Mexican National Archives and in theater production. Later she went on to direct and produce documentaries and feature films.
